Enhancing collaboration and communication across natural settings

in family-centered early intervention (EI).

In providing occupational therapy intervention within natural settings, this researcher has identified a problem in communication and collaboration among multiple providers and caregivers of young children involved in EI programs. This researcher was interested in exploring how information is currently shared and gain an understanding in how using an online learning platform might allow parents/caregivers involved with EI programs access to information directly and as often as needed.

This presentation discussed potential ways providers can improve communication and collaboration with all members involved in a child’s development. In so doing, providers positively impact the success of intervention and achieving child outcomes. Further, improvements in communication assists families/caregivers in locating and reviewing pertinent occupation-based practice information.

This research investigated how occupational therapists and other EI specialists engage in disseminating information reasonably, ethically, and responsibly. Potentially, meeting the needs of diverse client populations by addressing issues related to health disparity in rural, suburban, and urban areas. Sharing educational instructional tutorials demonstrating “best practices” through a dedicated website may help families and caregivers “bridge the gap” in following through with EI specialists recommendations.

This presentation discloses the results from a June 2016 survey sharing results of current Maryland Infant and Toddler (MITP) early intervention program‘s  communication and collaboration with families. It provides suggestions for alternative methods to enhance collaboration among shareholders involved in early intervention programs.
